What happens when a young graduate discovers that the opportunity he is waiting for may never come—and decides to create one for himself?
For Duncan Mawuko Kumah, a graduate of Takoradi Technical University with a background in Graphic Design, the answer was entrepreneurship. Rather than wait indefinitely for formal employment, he took a bold step into Ghana’s agricultural sector and founded Dunkies Coconut on 10 December 2025.
Operating at the pre-seed stage, Dunkies Coconut currently serves customers with chilled coconuts. But Duncan’s vision goes far beyond selling fresh coconuts. He wants to build a sustainable business that creates more value from coconuts, reduces agricultural waste, supports local livelihoods, and creates employment opportunities for young people.
Like many early-stage entrepreneurs, Duncan is navigating significant challenges, including limited funding, inconsistent access to quality coconuts, transportation costs, and the need for appropriate processing equipment. Yet these challenges have not stopped him from pursuing his ambition. Instead, they have taught him valuable lessons about planning, financial discipline, resilience, and the importance of building strong business relationships.
His long-term vision includes developing value-added coconut products, exploring coconut oil production, converting coconut husks into charcoal or other useful fuel products, and expanding into larger markets.
In this exclusive founder interview, Duncan shares the story behind Dunkies Coconut, the lessons he has learnt from starting small, the opportunities he sees in Ghana’s coconut industry, and the support he needs to take his business to the next level.
His story is a reminder that you do not have to wait for the perfect opportunity to begin building your future. Sometimes, the first step is creating the opportunity yourself.
Read on to discover Duncan’s entrepreneurial journey, his ambitions for Dunkies Coconut, and how the right investors, mentors, equipment suppliers, and strategic partners could help turn his vision into a scalable business.

1. Tell us about yourself and your business. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
My name is Duncan Mawuko Kumah, and I am a graduate of Takoradi Technical University with a background in Graphic Design.
Like many young graduates, I initially hoped to secure employment in the formal sector and build a career using the skills I had acquired. However, I eventually realized that waiting for employment was not the only path available to me. I had the determination to create something of my own rather than remain unemployed while waiting for a job opportunity.
This mindset encouraged me to explore entrepreneurship and identify opportunities where I could apply my creativity, skills, and willingness to learn.
That journey led me to establish Dunkies Coconut. I recognized an opportunity in the agricultural sector and decided to venture into business, even though it was different from my academic background in Graphic Design.
My entrepreneurial experience has taught me that education does not have to limit us to one career path. The creativity, problem-solving abilities, discipline, and understanding of people’s needs that I developed through Graphic Design continue to influence how I approach my business.
Today, I am building Dunkies Coconut with the vision of creating value, achieving financial independence, generating opportunities for others, and contributing to the growth of Ghana’s agricultural sector.
My journey is still evolving, but one thing remains clear: I chose to create an opportunity for myself rather than wait indefinitely for someone to give me one.
2. What inspired you to start Dunkies Coconut?
Unemployment was the main motivation behind starting my business.
After graduating from Takoradi Technical University with a background in Graphic Design, I expected to find a job in the formal sector and begin building my career. However, securing employment was not easy, and I did not want to remain at home waiting indefinitely for someone to offer me a job.
Instead, I decided to take responsibility for my future by creating an opportunity for myself.
I began exploring business opportunities around me and discovered the potential of the coconut industry. Dunkies Coconut was therefore born out of necessity, but it has gradually developed into a journey of purpose, learning, and ambition.
I saw entrepreneurship as a way to overcome unemployment, become self-reliant, and eventually create opportunities for other people.
My experience has taught me that sometimes, when the opportunity you are waiting for does not come, you must take the initiative to create one for yourself.
3. Who are your target customers, and what value does Dunkies Coconut offer them?
Dunkies Coconut primarily serves customers who want chilled coconuts.
As the business grows, we also aim to work more closely with coconut farmers and young people by creating opportunities across the coconut value chain.
Our broader goal is to transform a readily available agricultural resource into a sustainable business that generates income, supports livelihoods, and contributes to local economic development.
I believe coconuts offer opportunities beyond their immediate sale as a fresh product. With the right resources, equipment, and partnerships, we can explore ways to create additional value from coconuts while making better use of the materials that might otherwise go to waste.
Ultimately, I want Dunkies Coconut to become a business that benefits customers while also creating opportunities for other people within the agricultural sector.
4. What has been your biggest challenge as a founder so far?
One of my biggest challenges has been sourcing quality coconuts consistently and securing enough funding to grow the business.
Accessing a reliable supply of quality coconuts can be difficult, particularly when operating with limited resources. Prices and availability can also fluctuate, making it challenging to maintain a steady supply and plan business operations effectively.
Funding has been another major challenge. Starting and growing a business requires capital for purchasing coconuts, transportation, equipment, processing, packaging, marketing, and other operating expenses.
As a young entrepreneur starting with limited financial resources, raising enough capital to expand the business has not been easy.
Despite these challenges, the experience has taught me to be resourceful, patient, and creative when looking for solutions. I have learned to start with what I have, build relationships with suppliers and customers, manage available resources carefully, and reinvest in the business as it grows.
These lessons continue to shape how I approach the development of Dunkies Coconut.
5. What is the biggest mistake you have made in your entrepreneurial journey, and what did you learn from it?
One of my biggest mistakes was starting the business without having a sufficiently structured plan for sourcing and managing supplies.
In my excitement to get started, I underestimated some of the costs associated with transportation, sourcing, and day-to-day operations.
That experience taught me that passion alone is not enough to build a sustainable business. Proper planning, financial management, reliable suppliers, and a clear understanding of the market are equally important.
I also learned that mistakes are part of the entrepreneurial journey. Rather than allowing challenges to discourage me, I use them as lessons that help me make better decisions, manage resources more carefully, and plan ahead.
Today, I approach Dunkies Coconut with a stronger focus on planning, sustainability, and building the right relationships to support long-term growth.
My experience has reinforced an important lesson: starting a business is one thing, but building a business that can survive, grow, and create lasting value requires preparation, discipline, and continuous learning.
6. How did you finance your business, and what has your fundraising experience been like?
I started financing Dunkies Coconut mainly with my own limited resources, reinvesting whatever income I generated back into the business. Starting small allowed me to learn gradually while gaining practical experience in sourcing and selling coconuts.
My fundraising experience has been challenging. As a young entrepreneur without substantial capital backing, accessing external funding has not been easy. I have had to rely on personal savings and carefully manage the resources available to me.
Although raising funds has been difficult, the experience has taught me the importance of financial discipline, proper planning, networking, and developing a credible business model.
As I look toward the next stage of growth, I recognize that additional funding and access to appropriate equipment will be important in improving our operations and moving beyond basic coconut sales into value-added processing.
I am therefore interested in connecting with investors and strategic partners who understand the potential of agriculture and can support the long-term development of Dunkies Coconut.
7. What is the biggest opportunity you see for Dunkies Coconut right now?
The biggest opportunity I see is the potential to create more value from coconuts rather than focusing only on selling them as raw products.
I see opportunities to develop and market different coconut-based products while improving our sourcing, processing, packaging, and distribution. These improvements could help us reach more customers and establish additional sources of revenue.
Another important opportunity is building strong relationships with coconut farmers and other suppliers. A reliable supply chain would give us better access to quality coconuts and provide a stronger foundation for expanding the business.
With the right funding, equipment, and market access, I believe Dunkies Coconut can expand its operations, create employment opportunities, and become a growing participant in Ghana’s coconut value chain.
For me, the opportunity is not simply about selling coconuts. It is about building a sustainable business around an agricultural resource that can create value for customers, support livelihoods, and contribute to economic development.
8. What kind of support do you need to grow Dunkies Coconut?
At this stage of my entrepreneurial journey, I need support in four key areas: funding, mentorship, market access, and strategic partnerships.
First, I am looking for investors who can provide funding and equipment to help me move the business from basic coconut trading into value-added processing.
One of my immediate needs is a coconut cutting and processing machine that would improve efficiency, increase processing capacity, and reduce the amount of manual labour required.
I also need equipment that can help convert coconut husks into charcoal or other useful fuel products. This would allow us to make better use of coconut waste rather than letting it go unused, while creating an additional source of value and potential income.
Second, I need strategic partnerships with coconut farmers, processors, distributors, retailers, and potential buyers. These relationships would help me establish a more reliable supply chain and access larger markets.
Third, mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and industry professionals would help me strengthen my business strategy, improve operations, and make better decisions as the company grows.
Beyond financial support, I am looking for people who can open doors, share knowledge, challenge my thinking, and help transform Dunkies Coconut from a small operation into a sustainable business.
My goal is to build the right network around the business so that the support I receive creates long-term value rather than providing only short-term relief.
9. What connections or opportunities would you like SuccessValley to help you find?
I would like SuccessValley to help me connect with investors, equipment suppliers, experienced entrepreneurs, and strategic partners who can help scale Dunkies Coconut.
In particular, I am interested in connecting with investors who focus on agriculture, food processing, and sustainable businesses.
I need funding and access to appropriate machinery for coconut cutting and processing, coconut oil production, and converting coconut husks into charcoal or other useful products.
I would also welcome connections with experienced founders and industry experts who can mentor me on building a stronger supply chain, improving operations, developing value-added products, and accessing larger markets.
Most importantly, I would like SuccessValley to help me identify a strategic partner who believes in the potential of Dunkies Coconut and can support the transformation of my current small-scale operation into a sustainable and scalable coconut-processing business.
My goal is to use these connections to create more value from coconuts, reduce waste, generate employment opportunities, and build a business capable of growing beyond the local market.
I believe that the right combination of knowledge, funding, equipment, and partnerships can make a significant difference in how far this business can go.
10. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?
My advice to anyone who wants to become an entrepreneur is simple: do not wait for everything to be perfect before you start. Begin with what you have and be willing to learn along the way.
Entrepreneurship is not easy. There will be challenges, limited resources, mistakes, and moments when you may feel like giving up. However, every challenge can teach you something and help you become a better entrepreneur.
I also believe that unemployment should not stop you from creating a future for yourself. If you have a skill, an idea, or have identified a problem in your community, look for ways to turn it into an opportunity.
Start small, understand your customers, manage your money carefully, build good relationships, and remain open to advice and mentorship.
Most importantly, be persistent. Your first idea may not work exactly as planned, but you should not be afraid to learn, adapt, and try again.
My own journey from being a graduate waiting for employment to becoming a coconut entrepreneur has taught me that sometimes you have to create the opportunity you are looking for.
Believe in yourself, start where you are, and keep moving forward.
